Hi! I’m Catherine.
I was born and bred in Singapore. I graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic (with a Diploma in Digital Media Design), where I spent some of the best three years of my adolescent years. I left University after a year, feeling disconnected with what I was studying (Engineering), with a blind chase for paper. I figured that the world could do with one less disheartened engineer and often joked with my friends that anything I built would probably collapse, so why not pursue something that my gut feeling had been egging me on since I was 16. This life changing decision continues to influence the people whom I had met and will continue to meet.
I strongly believe that design is not just about creating beautiful graphics. I remember one of my ex-bosses (when I was a young, impressionable designer fresh out of school) who told me to ignore about coming up with a concept and just “create something beautiful”. I left.
Design, is about solving a problem, stripped down to the essentials. I believe in cutting the fluff and removing the unnecessary; which explains why my logo – a sheep, has no wool. I like to focus on identifying the problem and solving the issue on hand with deep insights and new perspectives to achieve a business objective. I am very demanding and meticulous at work, but a fiercely loyal friend in the personal realm, a trait I find atypical of people born in the Year of Dog.
My hardwired preference for cooling weather was put to the test during my two-year-stint in Nantong, China, where winters are technically 6 months long since spring temperatures are merely in name, but really none the different as those during winters. All my romantic thoughts about winters – being decked out in fluffy clothing complete with adorable ear muffs and long boots, would soon go up in airs as I discovered the harsh truth about enduring long periods of freezing temperatures. However, my heart was kept warm with the respect of the locals and the pure love of children as I taught Art in an International School over there.
After experiencing life overseas, I return to do more for Design and advocate the importance of diving into deep-seated problems of brand communications in order to come up with delightful and purposeful solutions for them. My works have brought me to speak at National University of Singapore, NTUC Income (HQ), Raffles Institution, Nanyang Polytechnic (to name a few), with my speech at NUS landing me a standing ovation and a mention on local papers, Lian He Zao Bao.
Besides design, I enjoy drawing and can do caricatures of anyone, a skill I honed during my internship at MediaCorp Studios as a fresh-faced polytechnic undergrad. I remain in good contact with my boss from MediaCorp.
I also enjoy exploring in Art. My artistic explorations have enabled me to exhibit my works at ArtScience Museum in June 2015, and later, brought on a collaboration with National Library. Two of my artworks of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, one drawn with confetti for his 91st birthday had nationwide mentions across various media outlets (including Mothership, TODAY, Straits Times, CNA, Channel 5 & 8 news, etc) and kickstarted a wave of congratulatory birthday messages for the late Mr Lee in appreciation of his lifetime contribution to the nation we have today. My latter artwork of him, drawn using melting candle wax, was featured on Lian He Zao Bao’s memorial app, available for download on iTunes.
I look forward to create more in both Art & Design and I would love to connect with you, if you have any questions or space for collaborations. You can reach me via anywool [at] gmail [dot] com.
